Three Major Taboos to Know When Using Scouring Pads

Using a scouring pad incorrectly can actually damage your belongings. I speak from experience-having fallen into these three traps myself-when I warn you: smooth surfaces are easily scratched, strong acids and bases can cause corrosion, and damp pads left unwashed become breeding grounds for bacteria.

1. Never scrub smooth surfaces.
For glossy materials like glass or stainless steel, even a single swipe with a scouring pad can leave permanent marks. My ceramic countertop suffered this fate, so now I use a microfiber cloth for cleaning; for stubborn stains, a melamine sponge does the trick.

2. Avoid pairing with strong acids or bases.
Highly corrosive products-such as toilet bowl cleaners or strong disinfectants-can erode metal surfaces if applied via a scouring pad. I typically stick to neutral cleaning agents; when mixed with warm water, they are just as effective at cutting through grease and grime.

3. Dry immediately after use.
A damp scouring pad is a haven for bacteria. I make it a habit to boil mine in water for five minutes every week, then let it air-dry in a well-ventilated spot. I also recommend replacing your pad every two months-don't wait until it starts to get moldy before you remember to get a new one!
