However, given their specific composition and function, scouring pads frequently come into contact with food scraps, grease, and moisture while cleaning dishes, countertops, and other surfaces-conditions that create an ideal environment for bacterial proliferation. Studies indicate that scouring pads harbor one of the highest concentrations of bacteria found in the home, including common pathogens such as *E. coli* and *Staphylococcus aureus*.

In practice, the frequency with which scouring pads are cleaned and replaced is critical. It is recommended to rinse the pad thoroughly with clean water and wring it out after every use, striving to keep it as dry as possible. If the pad has been used to clean raw meat or other ingredients prone to bacterial growth, it is advisable to sterilize it by boiling in water or by heating it in a microwave on high power for 1–2 minutes (provided the pad contains no metal components). Furthermore, the typical lifespan of a scouring pad is one to two weeks; they should be replaced promptly based on actual usage conditions-particularly if they develop an unpleasant odor, become damaged, or show signs of discoloration-as these indicators suggest a decline in cleaning efficacy and a potential accumulation of significant bacterial loads.
