Scouring pads are cleaning products manufactured using raw materials such as 7740-grade fibers, 7746-grade aluminum oxide, and silicon carbide. They are broadly categorized into two main groups-industrial and household-and include varieties that are either abrasive-impregnated or non-abrasive. As noted, in 2024, the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Abrasives and Grinding Tools officially standardized their classification as "Coated Abrasives: Non-woven Abrasive Cloths." Scouring pads find widespread application in fields such as interior decoration, metal grinding and polishing, and daily household cleaning. Household scouring pads-specifically those designed for kitchen use-can effectively remove stubborn stains when used in conjunction with cleaning agents, without damaging the underlying surface. Beyond washing dishes and chopsticks, they can also be used to remove lint and paper scraps from clothing, clean the skins of fruits and vegetables, and wash makeup brushes. Based on their material composition, scouring pads are primarily classified into types such as nylon pads, corundum (aluminum oxide) pads, and sponge-backed pads.

Industrial scouring pads feature an open-mesh structure characterized by elastic abrasion properties and resistance to clogging; they are primarily utilized for tasks such as surface treatment of metals and wood, machinery maintenance, and weld seam cleaning. Recent studies have confirmed that synthetic sponge-backed scouring pads release microplastic fibers during use and wear; furthermore, they may pose a latent risk of exceeding safe formaldehyde limits, and their porous structure creates an environment conducive to bacterial growth. To mitigate these risks, it is recommended that consumers exercise proper judgment when purchasing, use the products correctly, and replace them in a timely manner; natural alternatives-such as loofah sponges or bamboo-fiber cloths-are available as substitutes. Some products are manufactured using 100% recycled fiber materials, offering a combination of eco-friendliness and durability. The relevant production standard-the *Chinese Production Standard for Industrial Scouring Pads*-was established with the participation of industry stakeholders in 2016.
