Depending on various dimensions-such as intended application, material composition, abrasiveness level, and physical form-scouring pads can be categorized into numerous types to meet diverse cleaning and polishing requirements.


Classification by Application Area
Scouring pads can be broadly divided into industrial-grade and household-grade varieties. Industrial scouring pads typically utilize high-quality synthetic fibers-such as polyester or nylon-and are characterized by superior abrasion resistance and chemical resistance; they are primarily employed in industrial sectors for tasks such as metal grinding, polishing, deburring, and surface treatment. Household scouring pads, conversely, are designed primarily for domestic cleaning tasks-such as those in kitchens and bathrooms. These pads may be composed of materials such as cotton fibers or sponges; being softer in texture, they are well-suited for cleaning the surfaces of household items.


Classification by Material Composition
Nylon scouring pads (also referred to as industrial scouring pads) are composed of nylon fibers and can be utilized for polishing both metallic and non-metallic materials, as well as for deburring operations; they also exhibit relatively high corrosion resistance. Abrasive-grit scouring pads contain a high density of abrasive particles (such as corundum or silicon carbide); while effective at removing rust from iron or steel cookware and capable of providing a certain degree of polishing effect, they carry the risk of scratching or damaging the surface of the cookware.

Sponge scouring pads typically feature a core made of polyurethane or melamine-formaldehyde copolymer; as they contain no abrasive particles, they are suitable for cleaning coated cookware and various dishes and bowls. Currently the most common type of household scouring pad, they do, however, tend to harbor bacteria easily. Wood-pulp cellulose pads are manufactured using natural wood pulp as a raw material; they possess excellent water absorption and drainage properties, dry quickly in the air, and are less prone to bacterial growth.

 

Natural loofah sponges are derived from the natural loofah plant; while non-toxic and odorless, their porous structure creates voids that can easily harbor mold, and they tend to wear out relatively quickly.

 

Classification by Abrasiveness Level and Function
Based on the coarseness of the abrasive particles embedded in the pad, scouring pads can be categorized into various types-such as fine-abrasion, medium-abrasion, and heavy-duty abrasion-to suit different cleaning scenarios. For instance, fine-abrasion pads are suitable for delicate items such as glassware and non-stick cookware; medium-abrasion pads are appropriate for cleaning everyday tableware and furniture; while heavy-duty abrasion pads are designed for tackling stubborn grease stains in the kitchen, such as those found on stovetops.


Classification by Physical Form and Structure
Based on their physical configuration, scouring pads can be classified into single-sided pads and double-sided pads. A common design for double-sided scouring pads features an abrasive scouring layer on one side-used to remove stubborn stains-and a soft sponge layer on the other-used for water absorption, lathering, and wiping-thereby meeting a variety of cleaning needs.
